With Beccles Lido set to be making waves with its re-opening this weekend we asked Enjoy Beccles More members to share some of their favourite memories of the community pool.

The Lido opens for its summer season on Saturday, May 26, and has been enjoyed by people of the town for decades.

Many of you learnt to swim at the pool:

Annette Tackley said: “ My memories are of learning to swim there with Mr and Mrs Gray, swimming for Beccles Kingfishers and the great gala days they used to hold.

“All of my children learnt to swim at Beccles pool - it is areal asset to our town and heritage.”

Jane Thompson said: “Mr Burke and Mrs Tavener taught me to swim. i spent most of the school holiday there and got chucked out at lunch time so would have a picnic in Waveney Meadow.”

Susan Lowe added: “I remember Mrs Tavener, and Mrs Keeley, they were brilliant, they taught me to swim.”

Claire Smallman associates the Lido with her time at school.

She remembers “going swimming when at Sir John Leman Grammer, as it was then”.

“It was the early days of the pool, 1958 onwards, and we had to go at 9am - it was freezing, especially at the start of the summer terms in April.”

For others talk of the pool conjured up memories of childhood fun and mischief:

Ann Riches said she remembers “going off the top board and scaring my mum” and “doing can openers off the second board and seeing how high you could get the splash.”

While Nicola Bullen simply recalls the memories as the “best days”.
