For many pizza is a thing of true wonder and beauty.

With that in mind, last week we asked the people on the Enjoy Beccles Facebook page to vote for their favourite pizza in town.

And now we can reveal that Oakfired at the Royal Oak has come out on top.

The restaurant, situated in Ravensmere, specialises in authentic oak-fired Neapolitan pizza and received 51pc of the votes.

When the establishment opened last year owners Paul Jackson and Paul Williams declared a desire to bring “authentic food to the people of Beccles in a relaxed, informal environment”.

Neapolitan pizza is the world’s oldest form of pizza and the restaurant follows a precise recipe to ensure each dish is perfect.

Mr Jackson, who acts as ‘pizzaiolo’, prepares the pizza in full view of waiting and explained what makes the ideal Neapolitan pizza.

He said: “It should have a raised golden crust with a thin base. Then there should be the perfect combo of San Marzano tomatoes, Buffalo mozzarella and Extra Virgin Olive Oil.”

As the restaurant’s name suggests the pizzas are cooked in a huge oak-fired Valorini oven, which takes centre stage in the restaurant.

It reaches temperatures of 450 degrees Celsius and can cook the pizzas in 90 seconds.

Pizza Piatto, in Smallgate, came second in the poll with 26pc.

The other scores were as followed:

• Prezzo - 10pc

• Beccles Kebab - 5pc

• Domino’s - 4pc

• Chicken 200 - 4pc
