The Waveney Valley championship competition of Dwile Flonking will take place at the Lock Inn, Geldeston, on Monday, May 7.

Teams from the Waveney Valley and Chet Valley will be competing for the coveted Stuart Sneddon Memorial Trophy and raise money Beccles’ Big Dog Ferry.

The rules of the game can often be confusing, so here’s a quick guide:

• The game is played with one team joining hands to form a ring, with a member of the other side in the middle of the circle.

• They must put their beer soaked dwile on the end of a stick, and as they spin around attempt to hit an opponent.

• Points are scored depending on which body part is hit – but if the target is missed twice in a row then the competitor has to down a half of ale as quickly as possible.

It is believed that the Dwile Flonking revival began in the 1960s when rival printing apprentices at Clowes of Beccles and Clays of Bungay decided to battle it out in what was thought to be an ancient harvest ritual.

On Monday the festivities get under way at midday with a barbecue and live music from Cobbler Bob’s String Band.
