In Flashback Friday Enjoy Beccles More takes a look back at some of the town’s major stories and events from times gone-by.

This week we look back to 2012 when Beccles Lido Limited took over the town’s public hall.

The article below, written by Richard Wood, first appeared in the Beccles and Bungay Journal on Friday, January 27, 2012.

Lido team is backed to take the hall into new era

Beccles Public Hall is set to be run by Beccles Lido after Waveney District Council’s cabinet agreed to transfer ownership of the hall to the charitable group.

The charity, which rejuvenated the town’s open air swimming pool, is likely to take over the hall in the next few weeks after the move was approved on Tuesday night.

The council has invested heavily in the hall, in Smallgate, in the past decade, but with further investment required on structural issues and general refurbishment, it has been looking to find an owner to protect the hall for the community.

It was felt that Beccles Lido had the skills and ability to develop and operate the facility after transforming the outdoor swimming pool.

Stephen Ardley, Waveney’s cabinet member for operational partnerships, said: “We have spoken at great length to the people of Beccles to establish what they want from the ahll and its is clear that the Beccles Lido group will be able to deliver exactly what the town is looking for.”

The management of the Marian Theatre in Lowestoft and Waterlane Leisure centre were also recently transferred from the council to charitable trusts, and it is hoped this move will be successful.

Shaun Crowley, chief executive of Beccles Lido, said: “We are delighted that after months of discussion with Waveney District Council and completed our own research into the viability of the Public Hall and presented our business plan, that the council has unanimously endorsed our plan and voted to transfer the hall to our management.

“We look forward to making the hall as successful as the Lido and to confirming the hall’s status as a community and entertainment centre of excellence in Beccles.”

He added: “Saturday’s Cabaret Night fundraiser at the hall will now be a fantastic celebration of the start of a new era.”
